The city’s show-stopper is a trove of free and refined sights. It incorporates Pritzker Pavilion, Frank Gehry’s diving silver bandshell, which has free week after week shows in summer (6:30 pm; bring an outing and jug of wine); Anish Kapoor’s cherished shimmering figure Cloud Gate, otherwise known as the ‘Bean’; and Jaume Plensa’s Crown Fountain, a true water park that ventures video pictures of local people spitting water, beast style.
The McCormick Tribune Ice Rink loads up with skaters in winter (and outdoors burger joints in summer). The covered-up Lurie Garden sprouts with grassland blossoms and serenity. The Gehry-planned BP Bridge traverses Columbus Dr and offers extraordinary horizon sees, while the Nichols Bridgeway curves from the recreation center up to the Art Institute’s little, third-floor form patio (allowed to see).
Need more? Free yoga and Pilates classes happen Saturday mornings in summer on the Great Lawn, while the Family Fun Tent gives free children’s exercises day by day in summer from 10 am to 2 pm.
