South of the open zone of the Diwan-I-Khas in the Red Fort is the Khas Mahal, where the ruler lived and rested, protected from prying eyes by ribbon like cut marble screens. A cooling channel of water, the nahr-I-bihisht (waterway of heaven), once moved through the lofts to the contiguous Rang Mahal, home to the sovereign’s central spouse. The outside of the royal residence was once sumptuously painted; inside is a rich lotus-formed wellspring.

At the hour of exploration, guests couldn’t enter the Khas Mahal, however parts of the inside were as yet noticeable from outside.
