The 109 Kanheri Caves coating the side of a rough gorge 6km from the northern passage of Sanjay Gandhi National Park are a major draw. The caverns involve vihara (cloisters), chaitya (corridors) and residences, and were utilized by Buddhist priests between the first century BC and tenth century AD as a major aspect of a religious college complex.
